Really Exciting Events and Uniting to Resist

Hello Everyone,

First of a huge thankyou for all the feedback and traffic since my last post! Thankyou so much!! I hope you enjoyed reading it!

Now I have to be honest, I've done nothing constructive since my last post on Saturday (except watch the Godfather and eaten lots of food at home with my Girlfriend...which is not so bad!!), so this post is going to be a bit briefer than the post on Saturday (which I am sure you are pleased about!).

Two really exciting things are happening this week which I felt I really needed to blog on, because they both show the immense potential of technology and how it can intereact with the arts sector and show how the two working together can create a huge storm of interest.

The first is an event called "The state Of The Arts: Flash conference" taking place on Thursday. It has been organised by Hannah Nicklin (@hannahnicklin on Twitter) Andy Field (@andytfield) and Laura McDermott (@thederminator), here is a little more info on the event which makes it more interesting than I ever could:

"The Flash Conference is an imaginative new project designed to create brief but electrifying bursts of thinking and conversation amidst the main State of the Arts programme. Harnessing the spontaneity and collective energy of a flash mob, we hope to bring people together to create a flood of brief but provocative responses to the following questions.

How can art of all kinds play a more meaningful role in mass protest and popular resistance?

What makes a good home for art (and for artists), and how can we ensure there are more of them?

In an environment in which success is too often only measured by perpetual growth, how do we ensure that small remains beautiful?

(How) Can art make more people’s lives better?"

I've never been involved in a flashmob, yet I am really really excited by this project and a huge compliment should be given to Hannah, Andy and Laura for setting this event up. I'm almost too excited to carry on with this post, I'm literally bursting with excitment for this conference! Its going to be really interesting to see what the outcomes of this will be and how people respond to the provocations.

For more info on the conference check out the great website:
http://flashconference.co.uk/

Just like to also thank Aliki Chappel for posting the link to me! Very much appreciated!

I don't want to spend this post trying to answer the provacations because its more important just to spread the message of the event!!, but one thing has immeditaely come out of it for me. Art and popular ressitance is something which is vitally important for the ecololgy of the sector. Historically for any major dicatorship, the arts are the first sector which is always censored because of the creativity, the risks attached and the unique power art has to get right to the heart of the human experience. The 1950's provided a social revolution in British playwrighting, Dario Fo's plays have caused political and social uproar in Italy and the 'In - Yer - Face' plays of the 1990's on the British stage certainly provoked very strong opinions and very strong oppostion. We are uniquely placed at the moment in 2011 I feel to provide a very strong ressistance to the Colloation's art's cuts, we have something which we as a whole sector can unify together and protest about. It is something which has not just affected a few organisations it has affected everyone and everything across the board. Art at is very core does not have anyone to answer to, we are given criteria to meet and targets to meet, but at the very essence and what makes the arts the most thriving and interesting sector to be involved is that is different to every other public sector. Lets try and resist the tempetation to accept defeat in the wake of arts cuts, however bad they are great art is always possible and uniting together can bring about a new era of fantastic creativity!

Rant over with....... you will be pleased to know!!

The other thing I'm really excited about this week is happening at Live@Lica:
Manchester Camerata’s Digital Concert Hall

For Further Info:
http://www.manchestercamerata.co.uk/news/camerata-s-digital-concert-hall
http://www.lancasterconcerts.co.uk/concert.asp?c=121

Camerata will be presenting Schoenberg’s 'Verklärte Nacht' with real time digital visuals by video artist Netia Jones. I've never seen anything like this before, So I'm really hyped for this and can't wait to see it!

Other than of that excitment I will actually be doing some of my own work, working on text materials for the idea I outlined in the last post, will keep you all updated with the progress, meeting with my supervisor tomorrow morning to discuss where we are upto!.

Have a lovely week!
Take Care,

Marcus

The Football Transfer Window 31.1.11: Transmedia Storytelling through Tweets, Facebook Statuses and Text Messages

Hello Everyone,

I was going to be writing this post in my room on a Friday evening (I know...I'm old and a tad boring hehe) but before I could actually sit down and write something I had fallen asleep, so basically to cut a long story short I didn't write anything last night.

So I'm going to try again, this time I am on the train from Lancaster to Swindon and then on to Marlborough for the weekend to see my girlfriend. I do like train journeys for some perverse reason, mainly because particularly on a long train journey there is not much you can do aside from try and relax so its nice just to unwind; read the paper, surf the web etc.

This week has been a very busy and exciting one! The main thing that has happened has been an off shoot from the Facebook narrative I was explaining in my post on Monday. In preparation for my meeting with my supervisor on Tuesday I felt I was a bit lacking in new ideas and content to show him particularly because I had nothing to back up or even explain the concept of 'Transmedia Storytelling' which I have been working on. On Monday evening though by a very strange twist of fate, an idea presented itself to me as a great example of how 'Transmedia Storytelling' can work. The football transfer window may not sound like the most interesting of things that can be turned into a multi platform Transmedia Story. What I did was between 6pm and 11pm (when the Transfer window closed) was to record on the events that unfolded in real time. The narrative was composed of Tweets, Re - Tweets, Text Messages, Facebook Statuses and comments and the BBC Sport Twitter Hashtag: #BBC Football. What was really exciting about the project was that it was live and that it unfolded in real time right before my very eyes. Before I had started recording the information as it was coming in, I had no idea what was going to happen except for the face I knew that the transfer window was going to close at 11pm.

Below is the entire text of "The Football Transfer Window: The Transmedia Story telling"

The Football Transfer Deadline Day Story:The Transmedia Story telling

It is Monday 31st January 2011, PM. The annual football transfer window slams shut at 11pm Midnight. Clubs across the world are engaged in buying, selling and loaning out footballers. The biggest stories of the day are both concerned with Liverpool football club. Recently bought by a big American Finance group, they are hit with news on Friday 28th of January 2011 that their star striker Fernando Torres want’s to leave them, after handing in a transfer request. Chelsea, rivals of Liverpool in the Premier League had reportedly bid £35 million pounds to sign him over the weekend. At the start of Monday 31st January, the Torres situation is still unresolved, by mid morning it is reported that Liverpool have made a bid for Newcastle centre Forward Andy Carroll In the region of £30 million, Newcastle have rejected it. By mid to late afternoon the Carroll deal seems to be going through, with no news on Torres, only by late evening it is reported that Torres is talking to Chelsea over a possible transfer.

The deadline closes at 11pm, with many transfers being reported after the deadline.

News spreads through text message, twitter messages, re – tweeting people’s tweets, Facebook statues and the BBC football hastag on Twitter (#BBCFootball)

Networks of Tweeters emerge; rumours surface, and information is shared across various media right up until the last minute

As the window enters into its last stages, this is the story of how it unfolded.. in real time.

Liverpool’s £35m bid for Caroll accepted!! What has the world come to?

17:53:47pm Text Message from Tom McGurn to Marcus Lilley
Newcastle can afford to go down now. That’s basically one year premier league tv money. Stupidly mental

17:54:25pm Text Message from Alexander Whittam to Marcus Lilley
Lol that’s crazy! 15 million would be more accurate

17:57:08pm Text Message from Marcus Lilley to Tom McGurn
The deal is agreed! Mental, he no way more valuable than Torres, Teves, Rooney

18:03pm Facebook Status Update: Tom McGurn
If i had 35 million I'm pretty sure wouldn't spend it on a football player with less premier league goals than Heskey. Hell, you could feed an African Village for years with that, football is an sickening disgrace!

18:06pm Facebook Status Comment from Marcus Lilley to Tom McGurn
No word on Torres yet! I wonder if we will stay?? Interesting that in the space of 3 days Liverpool have 2 new strikers!

18:06pm Facebook Status Update: Marcus Lilley
£35m on Caroll? I'm sure he's a really good player, but in the current transfer climate (I don't agree with over inflated transfers anyway!!) he is not worth more than Villa, Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Torres or Berbatov. Sorry he is not, but if Liverpool are silly enough to pay that then fair enough, a good bit of business by Newcastle, the first time in years the NUFC board have made a sensible decision!

18:08pm Facebook Status Comment from Thomas McGurn to Marcus Lilley
Mike Ashley will simply pocket the money and it will never be seen again!!!

18:09pm Facebook Status Comment from Marcus Lilley to Tom McGurn
I can't believe I am actually agreeing with Newcastle, they have done something sensible and helping Newcastle United as a business. You are right though Ashley will just pocket the money

Sky sources however reckon he could end up at Swindon instead

LOL. My mate's best friend's uncle's taxi driver heard Villa was on his way to Villa.

Get over it- it's only a game.

19:35pm Facebook Status Comment from Jon Story to Marcus Lilley
Massively over-rated, they only paid that because he's English: he's probably the most inconsistent striker in the league.

FROM BBC SPORT WEBSITE:
“Liverpool striker Fernando Torres set for Chelsea talks” Page last updated at 19:49 GMT, Monday, 31 January 2011

Liverpool have given permission for striker Fernando Torres to hold talks with Chelsea after the clubs agreed a fee for a possible transfer.

A reported fee of £50m would make the Spaniard the most expensive footballer in Britain, beating Carlos Tevez's £47m move to Manchester City in 2009.
he Reds had already rejected a £35m bid from Chelsea after Torres' transfer request was turned down on Friday.

Newcastle's Andy Carroll is in talks with Liverpool over a proposed move.

A statement on the Liverpool website read: "Liverpool Football Club tonight confirmed they have agreed a fee with Chelsea for the sale of Fernando Torres.

"The player has now been given permission to speak to the London club."

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp on Sky Sports News says there is "no chance" of the club signing a striker tonight, nor any chance of Peter Crouch leaving for Newcastle as Andy Carroll's replacement. "We were never desperate," he adds. Expect three arrivals to Spurs and the sale of the big man within the hour, then. Joke. Obviously.

20:37pm Commentator on BBC Sport Live Transfer Update page
To be fair, that was a pretty emphatic response from Redknapp, it doesn't look like we're getting anything dramatic from Tottenham tonight. He did say the club bid for Everton full-back Phil Neville, but we've already heard from the Toffees boss that that one isn't happening, so that's that. It just doesn't feel like Deadline Day anymore does it?

yeah congrats on making the bbc sport website. I was like fuck, is that actually marcus?!

Writing this text was one of the most exciting things I have done since starting PROCAP, mainly because it showed the huge potential and endless possibilities there are for the emerging concept of 'Transmedia Storytelling'. Secondly it was really exciting because aside from the reporting on the BBC Sport website, the content for the narrative was entirely user generated from Tweets, Facebook Statuses and comments and text messages. An off shoot was to see how some of the tweets that were made actually appeared on the BBC Sport website. Of course If I ever wanted to do something like this again, I would have to do it live again. It would simply not work trying to recreate the live experience when it was not live (happening in real time). I would love to do this sort of thing again because it really showed what the possibilities are for Transmedia storytelling.

Following on from doing this on Monday evening, I had a meeting with my supervisor Matt Fenton on Tuesday. I had been very worried about the meeting due to the fact I felt I had not much new content to show him, especially the fact that since our last meeting before Christmas things had developed somewhat. Saying quiet freely that you are you interested in Trans-Media Storytelling is fine, but when you have nothing to really show or explain what it can do is almost pointless, because the person you are explain it to needs to grasp what it means and be able to give you constructive feedback. The meeting was really productive and as a result we've formulated an idea together of which next week will be spent working on content for the idea. I can't say too much about the idea because it will give it away. All I can say really is that the project will be a time based project taking place over a period a couple of weeks, will include a variety of social media and will take inspiration from a classic film. Keep your eyes peeled for further updates!

This upcoming week will be as I say mostly spent on developing content for the project, which is nice because it gives me some really focus which through no fault of anyone else I feel I have been lacking.

Hope you've enjoyed the text!

Have a lovely weekend!

Marcus

The Facebook Narrative

Hello Everyone,

This is going to be a bit of mishmash of things today! Last week was a good week all round for developing ideas. I developed an idea which I posted at the beginning of last week about using Facebook statueses to construct a year long narrative. This was a really good excerise to undertake, it is really interesting to recall events that have played out in recent months, it is equally as fasincating to look at how one reported these events through a medium which encourages you to share private feelings, thoughts in a public sphere. Before I started the exercise I recalled events that have happened over the last year or so (not to make my life sound at all interesting because it isn't!!) I finished University (Undergraduate), Graduated, entered the Graduate job market (briefly) and started my Masters Degree. Knowing what happened in these events made it even more interesting to see how I reported these events on Facebook, being able to see how these events unfolded over the months and over the year was fasincating to look at. It was a really good excerise in seeing for myself how I could try and tell a narrative in an unconventional manner but still keep to the essence of time and plot. Time was very important in the construction of the narrative, I copied every status with its time and its date so whilst reading it you can see the time continually changing.

I also did some more academic research and readings into Transmedia story telling / cinema and the city and art + Technology. More practical ideas need to be tried out this week for sure to keep the creativity moving.

Very sorry its been brief and a bit of mashup. Hope your are all keeping well and those of you who have been reapplying to the Arts Council for funding I hope it went well!

Take care,

Marcus

Transmedia Storytelling, Evaluation in the Arts and Work in Progress

Hello all,

Apologies for lack of blogging activity over recent weeks, as I said in my previous post I wasn't going to do any blogging as such over the Christmas and New Year period, due to the fact that I was at home (sunny Wiltshire!!) and that not to be rude I wanted to have a bit of a break!!

Although as with many things after a week or so I was yurning to be back doing creative stuff, but overall it was a nice break. I was in Bath for NYE with my girlfriend, I saw Tron in 3D in Bristol (Daft Punk were AWESOME!!!!!) and played Lazerquest for the first time and despite being constantly being ganged up on by little children and parents I had a great time!.

I got back to Uni last week and its been full on since, I was in Manchester for a few days last week, had to hand in a 5,000 word essay (sympathy please....no really have pity for me!) and a portfolio which included an Arts Council Application. It was a bit full on but now its nice just to get back into the groove and doing things at my own pace. The placement I am doing is with the Performing Arts Development and Network Agency (PANDA - http://www.panda-arts.org.uk/) based in Contact Theatre in Manchester. PANDA provide network opportunities, support and advice to a variety of performing arts companies and individuals in the North West of England. It is a fantastic company to work with, I have attended a few 'Spotlight on Events' run by PANDA in Lancaster and Chester over the last year or so and I have always been very impressed by the dedication and professionalism of the company and how considerate and engaging they are. The nature of my placement is to conduct research into how we evaluate arts and theatre. As a sector it is very hard to evaluate the experience of seeing arts events because it engages our emotions and emotions are hard to analyse. Efforts have been made to try and find a more productive method of evaluation which does not focus on written evaluation forms and instead tries to get to the heart of the experience for the audience member. The arts are a sector which in my opinion is unparalleled in offering experiences which takes people out of their ordinary lives and gives them a truly one off and unique experience. It is this we should savour, as a sector which prides itself on offering something unique why do we evaluate what we do in formats which are highly conventional? Is it because we just stick to proven forms of evaluation in other sectors and we are afraid of trying to conduct some form of evaluation based on the human experience because unlike stats and numbers it is very hard to make into easily digestible figures. Evaluation in the arts sector is vital, not only to gauge audience experience but also to use as a method of acknowledging what we have done artistically and use this information to inform our future artistic choices. Evaluating what has gone before but thinking forward at the same time. The second phase of my placement with PANDA is going to be in a few months allowing me to conduct more research and undertake samples and studies with PANDA members when I return.

The main highlight of the next few months will be the work in progress showing next month. In which all of the MA students have an opportunity to show something to the rest of us. I am really excited to see what everyone has been working on and have a chance to really understand the artistic directions people are taking. Now that I have done the first phase of my placement I am really looking forward to getting stuck in to trying lots of different ideas between now and the work in progress.

Over the Christmas holidays I did a considerable amount of thinking as to what was the area of artistic investigation I was going down. I know I am really interested in New Media Art, technology, social media, mobile technology design and I also know that I am really interested in the Urban space. This to me seems incredibly vague and just for my own state of my mind really I was looking for something that brought some of it together under one term.

I was reading an article in Wired Magazine about Transmedia (http://www.wired.co.uk/magazine/archive/2010/08/features/what-is-transmedia) and began to realise that this was probably one of the closest terms that could come to describe my work. Transmedia in essence is a term which came from Academic study and is now being transferred over to entertainment circles as term which seeks to find new ways of producing entertainment. The term has proved divisive among critics, academics and the entertainment industry. The term in essence is about developing a narrative or story over many platforms. For example starting off in a Film or Television series and then allowing one of the characters to share thoughts on a blog, or share their music interests on Spotify etc. It is multi - platform storytelling. It acknowledges that people's habits of consuming entertainment products are rapidly changing and that the days of the passive audience member have gone. Multi - platform storytelling allows for greater interaction between the audience and the product. A much more exciting and engaging experience for the audience.

Transmedia storytelling as a concept is really exciting for me and is something which I will be working on for my work progress. It is something which brings together ideas which I have been working on before Christmas and allows for even greater investigations and more freedom and creativity. I am looking at how we narrate our lives through various technologies.

For example I have done a small album on IDEASTAP of how we narrate our experiences of going to Nightclubs (http://www.ideastap.com/people/marcuslilley/standard-portfolio/b37293e5-f98b-465b-a596-9e7500d782ae/) and I am going to be collecting my Facebook statues over a year long period and seeing what sort of narrative emerges by looking back over the statues and seeing how they report the events over the year. These are just a couple of examples of looking at how we can bring different mediums together in order to tell a narrative or story to make more enjoyable and a much more involving experience for the audience.

Will report back at the end of the week!

Take Care,

Marcus

Evaluation of 1st Term of MA in Professional Contemporary Arts Practice

Somehow I managed to get back home to sunny Wiltshire over the weekend from Lancaster without any delays! That was quite unreal considering everywhere on the route from Lancaster to Swindon was covered in inches of heavy snow. I feel really sorry for all those people stuck trying to get somewhere for the Christmas period, I hope everyone gets to where they need to and above all that Happy Christmas and a very Happy New Year.

I am back at home for the Christmas break until mid January so I won't be doing much blogging over the festive period (sorry - Chocolate and TV call me.....) but I thought at this point I could do my self evaluation of how the last few months have gone on the course, based on the Learning Agreement me and my supervisor drew up at the beginning of the course. Apologies in advance if it becomes a bit repetitive and a bit boring, I'll try not to make it boring (I promise!).

"Marcus has a core interest in technology and mediation, and a concurrent fascination with the languages of cinema. This includes representations and changing attitudes of gender in cinema, the impact of cinema in the cultural domain and society; how technology can be used in the live theatre space, specific interest in 50's and 60's film noir.

Practical investigation will include viewing performances, exhibitions and films - at Nuffield, PSG, festivals, Manchester / Liverpool and further afield - to better be able to place own practice in cultural / artistic landscape"

My interest in Technology and performance has been something which for the last 2 and a half years has been centred up till the start of this course at looking and admiring visual technologies are deployed in the theatre space. In the last few months, that has shifted not only to looking at how I can deploy technology into my artistic practice (e.g. using it in performances) but also how I, as an emerging artist, can use technology to my advantage of promoting myself, using Twitter, Facebook, Blogger, Flickr and IdeasTap online profiles to better publicise my work and my interests. I have not looked into the language of cinema in as much detail, in fact I would probably say that looking at the language of cinema is not the correct description, because it is more looking at the cultural impact of cinema and how cinema and film have become one of the dominate cultural forms in our society. How, as a form, it brings together huge audiences and is technically innovative in its ways of communicating with audiences. The language of cinema of course comes into this, but as something I would have a clear research interest in, I would say the cultural impact of cinema is much more a clear line of thought.

Visiting Galleries / Exhibitions and seeing performances was one of my main aims for this term for two reasons. Firstly to keep myself involved with the arts sector, making sure that I knew what the main ideas and discussion points were at any given time. Secondly It will keep me inspired and gives me the opportunities to try and see who I am working in similar context to, what work is similar to mine and if there is an audience for what I wanted to make. One of my big worries is that I don't want to make work which is only for me, It has to be for an audience to enjoy, experience, relate to, disagree with, agree with, hate, love or dislike. In getting to as many performances and exhibitions as I can, helps to get me involved. Of course the more you can visit the better, there is no set limit on how much you should see. Towards the end of the term, I saw less and less however I had always imagined that the beginging of the term would always be the time that I would see more work and that was the case.

I got to see lots of fantastic work such as Forced Entertainment's new performance 'The Thrill of It all' and 'Inspector Sands: If that's all it is' at the Nuffield Theatre, Lancaster. I was at the 'Leadership Lab Conference' at the Hive in Manchester, visited Exhibitions at the Cornerhouse in Manchester, Tate Modern in Liverpool, FACT in Liverpool and Manchester Art Museum.

"Theoretical interests and reading including Judith Butler, Philip Auslander and Jean Baudrillard, plus re - reading Sophie Calle, Italo Calvino, Georges Perec, Walter Benjamin"

This term has been about researching and developing creative and practical ideas informed by research. I would be honest in saying that academic research has been poor, due to the fact that my mind has always been focused on running with practical ideas. I felt during the term that academic research was slowing down my creative process and it was only when I felt that I had a context of what I was interested in then I could return to academic research. Now that I feel I am confident with the context (the city landscape) that I can return and carry out detailed research into academic texts and associated materials.

"Marcus has established a working pattern that includes a weekly planning session (evidenced in a blog), 2 studio based workshop sessions (one of which can include showing work to supervisor) and a reflective session on Fridays (again evidenced in the blog). Studio sessions will take the form of practical investigations around specific ideas, including gathering material from task - based walks and excursions, integrating low-fi technology, as well as creative writing tasks".

Establishing a working pattern of blogging on Mondays and Fridays has been a really stable part of the process thus far, something which has allowed me to really get into a pattern and divert my energies into trying to work out what I need to spend my time more on. The Friday blog especially has allowed me to be very reflective and sometimes critical of what I have done during the past week. I have not been able to have 2 workshop sessions every week, either due to rooms being booked or due to the fact that I have had a lot of paperwork to catch up with.

Next term I really want to learn from this term. I want to block book a room for the entire term before I return in mid January to ensure that I have a space which is mine during the week. Instead of doing 2 workshop sessions I want to have a session of between 3 and 4 hours where I try out a lot of different ideas, this because I think I work much better when I have my own designated time just to play about and make things! The way I have been researching ideas for workshops comes from a number of different sources such as newspapers, TV / Radio Documentaries, performances, academic research. This method of research really suits me, I don't find it easy to sit down with a pile of books and read so being able to obtain research from a number of different sources not only keeps the research process ever evolving but also presents a number of different avenues to obtain information and research. The thing I will take from this term would be that I did not make nearly as many things creatively as I would have liked. I was more concentrated on researching and trying to develop my own mission as an artist and seeing what my role was, understanding myself as an artist than trying to make lots of end products. Each week next term I would really like to make something (e.g. a short performance, a short film) and show it every week as a means of generating a bank of material and examples to work from, for my final piece as part of the MA Festival in September.

"Student's desired Outcome: Use the first term as a testing ground for ideas, and to reflect on them. To Produce a body of reflection in blog form.

This term has a been a testing ground for ideas, informed by research and viewing examples which suit my interests (e.g. film Noirs, Gangster videos, Media art, New Media Art) and trying these ideas out in a practical format and seeing how I can develop these ideas in the future. Throughout the term I have used my blog very regularly to update on my progress, explain my ideas and analyse what I have been researching and consequently making.

"Objectives / Learning Outcomes: Learn about own working patterns, what's effective, solo practice, independence. Develop a body of possible approaches and technologies that might inform the final project. To develop a low-fi aesthetic performance language through which to explore core concerns.

One of the main concerns I had before I started this MA was how I was going to work on my own. I have always been very independently minded but I was extremely worried about how I was going to focus my energies and not spiral out of control. I sometimes getting obsessive about work that I do, I am a perfectionist and I always want to produce the best work I can do. Over the last 3 months the course has taught me to really try and direct my energies into the area that is best suited. It has made me realise that I do enjoy working on my own but I love to socialise as well and working on my own, actively tells me to try and speak to as many of my friends and family who are not connected to my work as possible because otherwise it makes me think that they are not important. I went through this phase during the end of my third year and It is something I am very keen not to re-approach because it is definitely not the right approach in life, let alone in your early twenties when you need to work hard but play even harder!

I have become a huge advocate of Twitter in the last few months. It has become a really important tool in the way I communicate with people. As an individual artist and not part of an organisation, It is essential as I see it to talk to as many people in the arts sector as possible. Twitter in my opinion is my best tool, It allows me to interact with people who I am making similar work to and establish myself very quickly, allowing me to post blog posts, link people to my pictures on Flickr and make contacts.

I have developed a series of low-fi technologies that I regularly use in my workshops which I feel are going to play a big role in the development of future creative outcomes. I use a Pentax Digital camera to take still photos and upload them on to my PC whereby I can then edit, crop and re design to suit my purposes. I also use the Pentax camera to take video which I can then project on to surfaces. I also use software on my PC such as Quicktime (to play videos) and Microsoft Office to develop powerpoints and text based materials.

So after all that..what is planned for the New Year?

The next big deadline is the Work In Progress showing in mid February where all of us on PROCAP are showing our work to each other, which I am very much looking forward to. Getting people to see your work is often quite daunting but I am very much looking forward to getting feedback to my work and seeing what other people on the course have been upto.

Over the next few months I will be doing a work placement with The Performing Arts Development and Network Agency (PANDA) in Manchester looking at reviewing the current way we evaluate the success of the arts and trying to come up with a new strategy of how we evaluate the arts.

After all that, I'll leave you alone!!

Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Marcus

Pitching, Work In Progress, Christmas.

It is coming to the end of a long, but very exciting and very inspiring term at LICA. Similar to what I said in the previous post, the last week of any term is always the busiest one. Deadlines loom, work springs up from seemingly nowhere yet it always seems to get done one way or the other. The difference I have noticed from Undergraduate to Postgraduate study is that working on deadlines has made realise that they are not everything in your life, you do have a life outside of your work; you need to eat, sleep, relax and chill out. These were factors I never used to factor into my work pattern, it used to be work or nothing. Even though there is a lot of content that I need to get done by Friday of this week, I feel much more clearly than I have done in previous years because of the experiences I have taken from them.

This week is going to be a busy one, yet as ever it is really exciting and really interesting to be involved with. Today (Monday) I am working on my Marketing and Promotional Strategy document for my business pitch on Friday. Although one can always think that marketing is a glamorous activity, there is a lot of leg work that goes behind the scenes which is fascinating to read up on and try and work out for yourself. It is very easy to say you will have a website and a Youtube Channel but if you don't know who your target audience is then there is almost no point because you'll end up missing your target audience. I've got a SWOT (Strengths / Weaknesses / Opportunities / Threats) Analysis to undertake for my artistic practice which is making me really think about my practice in a much broader scale. It is making me think if there really is a market for my practice, who are my competitors; who I am working in similar vain to. This is the first Marketing strategy I've done, so I am not expecting it to be brilliant, I want to make it the best I can, but I know it is the first one I have done so obviously it is not going to be of the highest professional standard. However I am learning all the time about all the different aspects to Arts Administration and I am really looking forward to hearing feedback because it will highlight things I have not possibly thought about, and ultimately it can make me more rounded in how I deliver information about my practice, which is a good thing!. (Not to sound Arrogant, I just really want to learn and always make things better!!).

Later on Today I am going into the Studio to rehearse for my work in progress tomorrow morning with Matt Fenton. I've got 3 main things to Show:

10 Photographs of a display called 'The City@Night' here's the flickr link to the photo set:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/lilleym/sets/72157625577153938/

A Text / Image Presentation using Microsoft Powerpoint which is a fictional text piece about arriving at Lancaster Train Station at night and visiting the various nightclubs around the city.

An overview of ideas for my short live / multimedia performance - using a video recorded on a webcam / photos of the city centre / video shot on a camera and some live performance with a soundtrack.

The work In progress showing is tomorrow (Tuesday) at 10am, I'm a bit nervous but at the same time I am happy that the development of these ideas has been an organic process. I set out at the beginning of the term to use this term as more of a research and development stage than a creative process and over the course of the term that is what has happened. This work in progress is an overview of the things I have been thinking about and what I have put into practice.

Friday is the day of my pitch, hypothetically to the Arts Council 'Grants For Arts' scheme. I'm very nervous as this is the first pitch I have ever done, but I'm also very looking forward to it because it gives me a platform to really engage people with my practice and really deliver a confident and assured presentation of what my practice is, where it has come from and where it is going.

Saturday Morning I head home back to Marlborough, Wiltshire for the Christmas break. I'm looking forward to spending some time home with my parents and my girlfriend and just let myself realise that my life isn't just dictated by my work.

In terms of working over the Christmas break I've got two major things to be working on: finishing off my 'Grants for The Arts' Application and Portfolio, along with my 5,000 word essay on the need for Theatre Institutions to be digitally innovative in communicating with their audiences. Hopefully they won't take all of the break to do!, I really want to eat lots and drink a (fair) amount over the break and reflect and celebrate on a great year!

Have a lovely week!

Friday 10 December 2010

Its Not Snowing Anymore!! But it is Raining!

STOP PRESS!!

Its not snowing anymore in Lancaster!

....Its just returned to rainy and showery weather!. Above all else this is the most important development this week, along with my friends Jon and Leo's attempt at cracking the ice outside the LICA building earlier this week!.

This week has been not necessarily a stressful one, but a lot has been happening which seems to building upto an intense couple of days over the weekend and into the beginning of next week. On Tuesday evening as I said in my previous post, I met Charlotte Stuart to discuss through my business plan for my arts social media consultancy business which I am looking to set up very soon after I graduate. The meeting was really productive because it got me to try and think strategically about the development of the business in the next few months from doing the necessary market research to developing a business plan. On Wednesday I was really happy to finally get back into making some creative stuff, I love being able to just make some creative pieces, because it allows me to just delve into doing things which I really enjoy. I was developing some ideas for my performance with multimedia elements by shooting some footage of myself on a webcam with the lights dimmed in my room, as if I was just getting up, aesthetically it looked interesting especially with the lights switched off and it being projected on to a display board from a projector. However if the performance I'm aiming to be is around 20 minutes, 5 minutes of me getting dressed is not interesting. Over the weekend I'm looking to re shoot the webcam footage as well as taking some video in the centre of Lancaster, and on the campus of Lancaster University. I am having a meeting with Matt Fenton on Tuesday to show him an overview of the work I have been working over the last few weeks including showing him 5 or so minutes of my live performance / multimedia, 2 photographic displays and a piece of text to give him a true overview of my progress this term.

I've achieved a lot this week, with a lot on it is hard sometimes to try and keep your head switched on. Next week is going to be intense, due just to it being the end of term and a lot of things due at the same time (but that is life!)

Will update more on what is on next week, on Monday.

Have a lovely weekend!
